Questions about BattPak5048 and XpansionPak9600

Is the BattPak5048 suitable for emergency power supply in UPS operation?

Yes, the BattPak can be integrated into the existing power supply, e.g., in the IT sector. While simultaneously charging via the power grid, the power flows directly to the consumer through a bypass. In the event of a power failure, the battery takes over the supply of the consumer with energy without interruption. Thus, the BattPak is excellently suited for uninterruptible power supply (UPS), e.g., in the IT sector.

Can the BattPak5048 be used while charging?

While simultaneously charging via the power grid, the power flows directly to the consumer through a bypass. In the event of a power failure, the battery takes over the supply of the consumer with energy without interruption. Thus, the BattPak is excellently suited for uninterruptible power supply (UPS), e.g., in the IT sector.

How many devices can I connect to the BattPak5048 simultaneously?

The BattPak5048 is equipped with two Schuko sockets. Both have the typical electrical power according to Central European standards (230V / 50Hz).

Since multiple socket outlets are offered, the BattPak5048 is secured with an integrated RCD protection against fault currents.

Can I use an extension cable with the BattPak5048?

Yes, using extension cables with the BattPak5048 up to 50 meters in length is not a problem.

If multiple devices are to be operated via a cable with distribution boxes, a PRCD personal protection device is required for the second or any additional device in case one of the devices generates a fault current. We offer compatible adapter cables with PRCD protection for this purpose.

Questions about technical backgrounds

What is LiFePO4?

The abbreviation stands for lithium iron phosphate battery. The advantage of this battery technology is its maintenance-free nature and longevity.

Advantages of LiFePO4 battery vs. lithium-ion battery: LiFePO4 batteries are safe and stable rechargeable batteries due to the high thermal and structural stability of lithium iron phosphate. They have a longer lifespan, making these batteries cost-effective in the long run. They contain no hazardous materials and are therefore more environmentally friendly.

LFPs are named after the chemical composition of the cathode, which consists of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). The anode is usually made of carbon; the electrolyte is a lithium salt in an organic solvent. The chemistry of LiFePO4 offers improved safety features compared to lithium-ion. The presence of iron, phosphorus, and oxygen atoms in the cathode creates strong covalent bonds. As a result, the battery is more stable and less prone to thermal runaway and overheating issues.

Importantly, LiFePO4 batteries do not use nickel or cobalt – two metals whose supplies are dwindling and whose origins are often questionable.

Lifespan:

  • LiFePO4: The lifespan of LiFePO4 batteries is over 6,000 cycles. This makes them ideal for applications that require frequent charging and discharging. They have a longer lifespan, making these batteries cost-effective in the long run.
  • Lithium-ion batteries generally have a shorter lifespan of up to 2,000 cycles.

Safety:

  • LiFePO4 batteries have high stability and safety due to the chemical bonds in the iron phosphate material, with a lower risk of thermal runaway and fire.
  • Lithium-ion batteries are more prone to overheating and thermal runaway, which can lead to fires or explosions if mishandled. Safety mechanisms are essential in the design of lithium-ion batteries.

Environment:

  • LiFePO4 batteries are considered more environmentally friendly as they do not contain cobalt.
  • Lithium-ion batteries contain cobalt, which is associated with environmental damage and human rights issues in mining.
What does 7.5 kW peak mean?

Electric motors have a high inrush current because more power is needed to accelerate the rotating flywheel mass than to maintain the speed. We have programmed the BattPak5048 to sustain this peak power for up to 10 seconds, ensuring your motor starts correctly.
